Abstract

The COVID19 pandemic has led to increased healthcare utilization, with patients frequently needing intensive care units. Critically ill patients with COVID19 need central venous access to provide life-sustaining treatment. Ultrasound guidance has been shown to improve the safety of central venous access. In this lecture, we will describe how to use point of care ultrasound to perform internal jugular venous cannulation and how to use low cost tele-simulation to train physicians in dynamic needle guidance.

Learning Objectives

1. List indications and contraindications for ultrasound guided central venous access

2. Describe how to prepare for the procedure

3. List the steps of the procedure

4. Describe complications of the procedure

5. Describe how simulation can improve practice

6. Recall the essential elements of simulation
