EXPRESSION OF INTEREST GENERAL PRACTICE HOSPITALIST -

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis

November 9, 2023

Come for the adventure. Stay for the lifestyle.

The Yukon is an incredible place to live, work, and play. Professionals from around the world are drawn to the stunning scenery, high quality of life, and vibrant arts and culture. Whitehorse, the capital city, offers an unexpected contrast to the Yukon’s remoteness, providing the amenities of a larger city, including a range of shopping, dining, education opportunities and health care services.

It’s a different world up here.

The Yukon provides the space for you to advance your career while providing financial incentives that make it attractive to practice here. These include the northern living allowance, no territorial sales tax, free medical coverage, tax-deductible vacations, and numerous incentives and benefits for members of the Yukon Medical Association.

You’ll also enjoy a high quality of life. With our relatively small population, you will be able to make a real difference in people’s lives. When you choose to share your skills and expertise in the Yukon, you’ll quickly build strong ties with the local community. You’ll find that the small, close-knit nature of the community makes it easier to establish meaningful relationships with your colleagues, neighbours and the community.

The Hospitalist Service at Whitehorse General Hospital is a growing service with opportunities to work alongside allied health care providers to deliver high quality in-patient care to Yukoners.

Come grow your career in the Yukon.

Program Description:

  • Whitehorse General Hospital has a total inpatient capacity of 50 beds:
o   ICU: 4
o   Medical: 24
o   Surgical: 17
o   Mental Wellness: 5
o   There is an additional potential for admitted patients held in the Emergency Department (this in addition to available in-patient beds)

Reporting to the Chief of Staff(s), hospitalist physicians provide inpatient care at Whitehorse General Hospital (WGH), specifically for General medical and intensive care to adult and pediatric in-patients.

  • Adult medical patients who require admission for acute medical care needs. In some exceptional circumstances, hospitalists will work with an external specialist to support psychiatric pediatric patients in the transfer to an appropriate level of care.
  • Inpatient coverage provided by the program includes the Medical Unit, Surgical Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Mental Wellness Unit (secure medical unit).
  • Hospitalists provide care and maintain health records consistent with Yukon Hospital Corporation policies, clinical standards established by the Medical Advisory Committee and Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules.
  • The Hospitalist program, generally, covers admissions, assessments, consults and discharges in alignment with any inter-departmental agreement.
  • The Hospitalist group works together to ensure continuous coverage to support any patients admitted to the service, every day of the year.

Hospitalists Program Overview:

You can expect to see attached and unattached inpatients, from remote communities or unstable housing, including in ICU (supported by anesthesia) and medical issues on psychiatry. Patients tend to be more medically complex than other hospitalist programs because we don’t have ICU or IM available to take over, though they’re an easy phone call or “app message” away. Great variety, high acuity and good support with local general surgeons/orthopedics/pediatrics/psychiatry/anesthesia.

Remuneration:

  • Hospitalists work a 9-hour day, 0800-1700, 7 days a week and are rostered through the Chief of Staff at Whitehorse General Hospital, with an on-call requirement from 1700 to 0800 24/7/365.
  • The daily rate for hospitalists is $2,070 through an alternate payment arrangement (APA). On-call is billed using a fee-for-service model and is remunerated outside of the APA.
  • Hospitalist services provided outside of the 9-hour workday are billed using a fee-for-service model and are remunerated outside of the APA.

Education and Licensing:

  • Physicians must demonstrate a Certificate of the College of Family Physicians.
  • Be licensed by the Yukon Medical Council to practice medicine in Yukon.

Expressions of Interest must contain current curriculum and demonstrate certification in the College of family Physicians of Canada. Applications will be reviewed on December 1, 2023.
