McGill University Africa Field Studies Semester (AFSS)

Physician for McGill Field Study Semester required
February 12 – March 11, 2024

McGill University’s Africa Field Studies Semester program https://www.mcgill.ca/africa/ requires a physician to travel with the 35-40 group members (senior university students, a few Canadian and African faculty and a small group of African logistical supporters) in Uganda in the months of February/March, 2024. The student group will travel to Kibale biological research station and Nabugabo on the shores of Lake Victoria.

We are looking for a Canadian licensed graduate physician with a Family Medicine background and some emergency medicine triage capabilities who would like to travel with the group during this time.

The AFSS program has always travelled with a Canadian physician accompanying it. Fortunately, there have been no major medical problems during the years that the group has done this trip. Having a physician and a well-stocked first aid kit has avoided unnecessary delays or questionable medical care for the group and provides security for parents, students and McGill. Medical duties include assessing and managing symptoms and medical concerns (usually minor athletic injuries, rashes, gastroenteritis etc), being available for any urgent care (triage and arranging appropriate management of any significant injuries or illnesses), acting as an advocate for injured or ill students who may require hospitalization and overseeing general medical security (water, sanitation) for the group as they travel.

All costs of travel are provided as well as a stipend of $250 CAD per service day and $100 per travel day. CMPA malpractice coverage will apply to this work.

This job gives a qualified physician the chance to see parts of East Africa not usually visited by tourists, and the opportunity to participate and learn with instructors who are world experts in African culture, biology and sociology. The student group is a motivated, intelligent and generally healthy contingent of young university adults who are stimulating and cooperative.

If you might be interested in this job opportunity for February 2024, please contact me for any questions or to submit a resume.
