Assessment on Health Human Resources
Health Canada asked the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) to lead an assessment on the state of Health Human Resources, and the SRPC participated in a round of stakeholder consultations. We also provided them with SRPC’s HHR position statement. There were eleven stakeholder engagement sessions; eight covered the provinces and territories, one for rural and remote, one for equity-deserving groups, and one specifically Indigenous. By analyzing scientific evidence and being informed by key stakeholders, the CAHS will provide policy makers with possible pathways forward as they consider developing strategies to deal with issues related to our health workforce. Over the course of these eleven sessions, over 150 organizations sent representatives to participate in these discussions, which focused on some of the gaps found in their preliminary review of the evidence. They are now working on collating the information gathered from these sessions. A stakeholder report further detailing the results of these discussions will be available upon release of the assessment report in the new year.

SRPC Represented at Rural Wonca
In June, SRPC representative Dr. Ruth Wilson, attended the WONCA World Rural Health Conference 2022 held in Limerick, Ireland. She led two workshops regarding building a sustainable rural physician workforce in Canada and around the world highlighting the work of the SRPC/CFPC’s Rural Road Map. The focus of these workshops was to share the Canadian experience concerning rural physician workforce issues related to the Rural Road Map for international jurisdictions to consider.
Specific issues covered included: - leadership in rural medical education in the application of rural competencies and rural education pathways
- incorporating effective strategies needed for negotiations with governments on effective HHR planning for rural physicians to support rural training and practice infrastructure
- national medical licensure
This was part of the conference’s general theme of improving health and empowering rural communities. Dr. Wilson also participated in 2 international panel discussions in sharing perspectives about the Canadian experience with rural medication education and rural generalism. Participants expressed a high level of engagement and interest regarding the Canadian experience and how it can be applied internationally.

If you are currently working as a rural doctor we invite you to participate in our 15 - 20 minute study.
This study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee at The University of Adelaide (HREC Approval No. H-2022-086). It is being undertaken by the following research team: Lucie Walters, Robert Brooks, Jill Konkin, Ian Couper, David Campbell, Ruth Stewart, Susan Williams, and Isabella White.

SRPC Featured Member - Dr. Francisco Garcia
|
|
My name is Dr. Francisco Garcia and I’m a double board-certified urologist and specialist in sexual medicine (male and female) that now calls rural Saskatchewan my home. I have been living and working in Swift Current for 8 years, and have spent that time creating a rural centre of excellence in sexual medicine that draws patients from around the province, and more recently across provincial borders. While I practice general urology and perform a wide variety of cases, I have always had a passion for quality-of-life surgery, and found my home in sexual medicine. Sexual medicine is truly an area of medicine where we are forced to be generalists, accept the biopsychosocial model, and take off our blinders to understand the whole person and their hurdles to improve their quality of life.

The Canadian Medical Forum issued an urgent Call to action for health care system improvements in support of comprehensive primary health care.
