BANFF PLASTICS TECHNIQUES
For the Rural Emergency and the Enhanced Surgical Skills Physician

January 21st 2016

Goals for attendees:
  • Understand the principles of temporary closures for complex wounds: "Turn a 3 am emergency into a 10 am case for consultant"
  • Proper irrigation technique and antibiotic use in wound care.
  • Ulcer Treatment
  • Understand the basic principles of hand injury and fingertip care.
  • Be capable of performing an extensor tendon repair.
  • Develop the ability to use simple flaps to aid in wound closure.
  • Understand the use of the basic wrist and facial nerve blocks to facilitate wound closure.
The Course will have a low faculty-student ratio (4 Faculty/32 attendees) and be heavily hands-on. Duration is eight (8) hours the majority being handson using pig-skin. Eligible for 8 Mainpro-C credits.
Attendees will be given the opportunity to perform the following procedures under supervision:
  • The Vertical and Horizontal Mattress Suture and the Corner Suture
  • The V-Y closure
  • Simple bi-lobe and rhomboid skin flaps
  • Extensor tendon repair
  • Fingertip split thickness skin graft

The Course is designed for the Family Physician and the Enhanced Surgical Skills Physician who sees complex lacerations and hand injuries on an intermittent basis. The Course will run 8 hours and will be a mixture of didactic and hands-on.
