Report on Anesthesia Care and
Pain Medicine in Rural and Remote
Regions of Canada |

Anesthesia
services are critical for the provision of surgical and maternity care
in rural settings. A national shortage of anesthesia providers is being
forecasted. Canada needs a strategy to sustain high-quality anesthesia
care in rural Canada; the attached report details the results of a
Symposium hosted in November 2020 to move us closer to that goal. The
report includes links to video clips from some of the presentations. It
aims to provide a work plan for a way forward to address the need for
the sustainability of high-quality anesthesia care in rural Canada. |

Consensus Statement on Networks for High-Quality Rural Anesthesia, Surgery, and Obstetrics Care in Canada
The medical and surgical professional organizations involved in delivering high-quality anesthesia surgery and obstetrics care as close to home as possible in rural Canada have collaborated, with SRPC leadership, to author a Consensus Statement on Networks for high-quality care.
In its present form, it is endorsed by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, the Canadian Association of General Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Association of Canadian University Departments of Anesthesia, the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada, and the Rural Road Map Implementation Committee.
This is still very much a work-in-progress as we continue a consultative process that should include, among others, patient and community voices, including, and especially, the voices from Canada’s indigenous peoples.

The Future of Rural and Northern Health Care in Canada |
|
|
In
this 34 minute podcast, Dr. James Rourke presents contrasting visions
of a realities-based dystopian future and a possibilities-based utopian
future. After a visualization exercise, he uses 16 Canadian examples to
shine a light on four essential areas: Rural Mental Health, Maternity
Care, Primary Health Care, and Rural Emergencies and Transfers. He
closes with four vital future directions: Rural Health Research, Rural
Health Care Plans, Networks of Care, and the Quadruple Aim Rural HHR.

Memorial University Medical Students Produce Documentary about Rural Physicians
Memorial University medical students and filmmakers Daniel Rees and
Lindsay Webster are the creators of a new documentary 'Talk to Your
Doctor: Stories of the Rural Physician in Newfoundland and Labrador',
which sheds light on the struggles and successes, the charms and
challenges of life as a rural doctor. The film features generalists and
specialists from rural areas across the province, bringing awareness to
the struggles of rural physicians while also celebrating their

Seeking Members for New SRPC - FPA Committee
Dr. Erich van
der Linde, SRPC Anesthesia representative, is in the process of developing an FPA
Committee to help represent the whole spectrum of FPA’s in different work
settings across the country. We are looking
for at least 1-2 representatives per province/territory that will help foster
the national landscape and promote our interests.
Dr. van der Linde
is also one of the two SRPC Anaesthesia representatives for the Collaborative
Advisory Group on Anaesthesia (CAGA), a
collaboration between the SRPC, CAS and CFPC that drives the national agenda
for rural FPA’s.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, SRPC members have been seeking out additional information, tools, and resources as it relates to palliative care. You have demonstrated that learning about palliative care is important as you strive to provide the best possible care and support to your patients and their families. In recognition of the interest and commitment to palliative care, SRPC and Pallium Canada have teamed up to extend a 50% discount on LEAP Online to SRPC members.
Pallium Canada is a national leader in providing continuing medical education on palliative care for health care professionals across Canada. Its Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) courseware provides practical, interprofessional, and evidence-based training and tools in the palliative care approach across multiple health care settings. Over the past twenty years, Pallium’s courses have equipped tens of thousands of primary- and generalist-level health care professionals with core competencies in palliative care.
LEAP Online is a facilitated online learning program that provides health care professionals with the essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach. LEAP Online includes 16 online modules completed at your own pace and 6 hours of webinars led by LEAP facilitators who are experienced palliative care clinicians and educators. This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 24 Mainpro+ credits.

Indigenous Health Webinar Series
Improving care for Indigenous patients and communities is something the SRPC has committed to. One of the strengths of the SRPC is providing high-quality, rurally‑relevant education for our members. We are taking some much-needed steps to provide our members with access to knowledge critical for providing culturally safe care to Indigenous communities.
In December 2020, we held an introductory session, ‘Moving towards Cultural Safety, Reconciliation, and Anti‑racism’. In February, we presented ‘Jordan, Joyce, and Justice: Decolonizing Healthcare for Indigenous Children and Youth’. Both of these recordings are available on our website, and we encourage you to view and share them with your colleagues.
April 22nd – 24th we are hosting our 28th Annual Rural & Remote Medicine Course – Take 2! There are many Indigenous-focused presentations that we hope you will participate in.
The third presentation in our Indigenous Health Webinar Series is planned to take place in May. Stayed tuned for further details. |

SRPC's Featured Member - Dr. Devin Hasanally
I'm Devin Hasanally and I'm currently completing the Enhanced Skills Program in Family Practice Anesthesia at the University of British Columbia. I completed family medicine residency in the Nunavut program at Memorial University of Newfoundland where I spent 6 months in Iqaluit, NU. I completed medical school at the University of Manitoba in 2018, having previously participated in the Rural Manitoba Health Mentorship Program in 2014. I was intrigued to see a team of family medicine practitioners in Dauphin, MB take care of all aspects of medical care and this made me actively pursue family medicine when I entered medical school. I've previously been involved in cardiovascular research finishing a Masters of Science in Cardiac Physiology in 2015. This interest extended into my family medicine residency where I engaged in providing a feasibility write up for implementation of a rural exercise medicine program in rural Newfoundland, work that continues with Dr. Christopher Patey at the Carbonear Institute of Rural Research and Innovation by the Sea (CIRRIS). |

I have a favorite quote that encourages speaking up for those
being silenced:
'First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak
out - because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I
was not a Jew.
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for
me.'

It reminds me of the power of speaking up for groups that
are actively being silenced by the status quo; very similar
things that happen in rural, indigenous, and remote
communities.
The future goal of my practice is to provide high quality
health care to the rural populations within Canada. This
includes the northern communities that have difficulty
retaining physicians for long periods of time. |

I believe this
is one of the most rewarding areas of medicine in Canada and I
hope for a renaissance of high quality rural and remote
medicine due to increasing need.
I view the SRPC as an integral and essential part of health
care delivery in rural Canada. As a group, I believe that
physicians have a voice that needs to be utilized to improve
care for those in rural and remote communities. I believe that
the SRPC is a passionate group of individuals with this goal
in mind. I'm constantly inspired by those who have shared
their experience and wisdom through the trials of rural
practice especially in the time of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
I look forward to meeting a great many of you in the coming
years and to perhaps see you soon in person. I look forward to
the next in person Rural & Remote. Cheers!" |

Canadian Medical Forum Supports the COVID-19 Vaccines Authorized in Canada
The Canadian Medical Forum (CMF) brings together leaders of Canada’s major national medical organizations to discuss issues of priority to physicians, their patients, and the Canadian healthcare system. The CMF is supportive of Canada’s COVID-19 immunization program and is encouraging all Canadians to get vaccinated. The COVID-19 pandemic has killed over 20,000 Canadians in less than a year and is bringing our health care system to the edge of collapse. There is good news on the horizon as the COVID-19 vaccines are starting to be administered around the country. We must support vaccination to end this pandemic.
