SRPC AGM Minutes
Our AGM was held on June 3rd, and the following points were discussed:
- the 2021 budget was approved
- membership reports a 37% increase in physician members
- SRPC by-laws were reviewed and approved
- new Student and Global Health Committee chairs
- presidential installation

The Federal Response to COVID-19: Interim Observations
SRPC Past President, Dr. Margaret Tromp, represented the SRPC on May 20th at the Senate's Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. They were asking for input from medical organizations into their study of the government's response to COVID-19.
The Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology released an interim report on July 9th.

CAEP's Rural & Small Urban Section Chair Position
The CAEP Board is currently looking to fill the Chair position for its Rural and Small Urban Section, which has a voting seat on the Board of Directors. The goal is to have a strong rural voice to lead the Section and advise the Board on issues related to rural emergency medicine.

SRPC's Featured Member - Dr. Cait Champion
|
|
|
Dr. Cait Champion is a graduate of the
University of Ottawa General Surgery training program, completing her training
in June 2019. She received her MD from the University of Toronto in 2012
and has a BSc (Honours) in Environmental Science from Acadia University.
Throughout her medical training career Cait pursued experiences that have
cultivated a passion for rural communities and rural surgery. During
her training Cait pursued an MSc in Health Systems, examining rural and
remote access to colorectal cancer screening in the Northwest
Territories. The project was used to inform implementation of a
territorial cancer strategy aimed at improving patient cancer outcomes
in an area where colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of
cancer death, particularly among Indigenous patients. |

|
In addition to her thesis research, Cait also pursued clinical elective opportunities to enhance her understanding of the breadth of rural surgery and develop the surgical skills required to meet the needs of rural communities, including skills in c-sections, Urology, ENT, and GI endoscopy. She also pursued an elective in Wilderness Medicine to further her capacity in remote environments. Cait was recognized by the Canadian Association of General Surgeons in 2019 for her dedication to rural surgical training and was awarded the G. William N. Fitzgerald Award for Excellence in Trainee Rural Surgery.
Cait looks forward to continuing to develop her skills and experience as a rural surgical generalist as a General Surgeon in Parry Sound, ON. She is continuing to engage with the national rural medicine community and rural and remote surgical research as an Assistant Professor with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and is committed to providing opportunities for rural patients to access high quality general surgery care as close to home as possible.

Nancy Edwards was on vacation in Bancroft ON and saw SRPC member, Dr. Steven Griffin, featured in the Brancroft Times for his Rural Service Award. She sent us a nice note thanking the SRPC for their work and a copy of the newspaper. Thanks Nancy!

ACRRM News - Congratulations Dr. Ruth Stewart
The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) welcomed Associate Professor, Dr. Ruth Stewart as the National Rural Health Commissioner. As former ACRRM President and a highly experienced rural health advocate, medical practitioner and researcher, her appointment will keep the implementation of the National Rural Generalist Pathway (NRGP) on track and ensure all rural and remote Australians have access to the healthcare they deserve. |
