McGill University Africa Field Studies Semester (AFSS)

Physician for McGill Field Study Semester required
    February 12 – March 11, 2024

McGill University’s Africa Field Studies Semester program https://www.mcgill.ca/africa/ requires a physician to travel with the 35-40 group members (senior university students, a few Canadian and African faculty and a small group of African logistical supporters) in Uganda in the months of February/March, 2024. The student group will travel to Kibale biological research station and Nabugabo on the shores of Lake Victoria.

We are looking for a Canadian licensed graduate physician with a Family Medicine background and some emergency medicine triage capabilities who would like to travel with the group during this time.

The AFSS program has always travelled with a Canadian physician accompanying it. Fortunately, there have been no major medical problems during the years that the group has done this trip. Having a physician and a well-stocked first aid kit has avoided unnecessary delays or questionable medical care for the group and provides security for parents, students and McGill. Medical duties include assessing and managing symptoms and medical concerns (usually minor athletic injuries, rashes, gastroenteritis etc), being available for any urgent care (triage and arranging appropriate management of any significant injuries or illnesses), acting as an advocate for injured or ill students who may require hospitalization and overseeing general medical security (water, sanitation) for the group as they travel.

All costs of travel are provided as well as a stipend of $250 CAD per service day and $100 per travel day. CMPA malpractice coverage will apply to this work.

This job gives a qualified physician the chance to see parts of East Africa not usually visited by tourists, and the opportunity to participate and learn with instructors who are world experts in African culture, biology and sociology. The student group is a motivated, intelligent and generally healthy contingent of young university adults who are stimulating and cooperative.

If you might be interested in this job opportunity for February 2024, please contact me for any questions or to submit a resume.

    Director McGill AFSS
    Professor, Department of Geography

Exciting opportunities for rural Family Practice Physicians in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region in BC. Come join the collegial Emergency team with 6 full time ER physicians in Williams Lake.

In this rural community, you can still practice emergency medicine without CCFP-EM. Shifts are currently single-coverage 24/7 ER but we are hoping to add a permanent overlap shift. Shifts are 8 hours in sets of 6 on /6 off with 2 mornings, 2 afternoons and 2 nights consecutive which works out to around 14-16 shifts per month.

You will see a broad range of interesting cases with high volume and acuity. You are well supported by specialists in Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn, General Surgery, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. The Cariboo Memorial Hospital (CMH) is part of the rural teaching program for UBC Medical School. The ER will regularly have medical students and residents that you can provide teaching opportunities. Within the medical community, there are many other opportunities if you desire to broad our scope of practice too.

Short and Long Term Locum opportunities available for Emergency Physicians while we recruit for a permanent ER physician at Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake.

Come and enjoy what it feels like to be appreciated and valued while providing service to the wonderful community of Williams Lake. And if you find you might just want to stay…

This is your chance to join a strong, cohesive and supportive rural physician team, providing full-service primary care in a well-appointed 4-physician office, as well as ER and long-term care at nearby Boundary Hospital. This financially rewarding practice (with an income potential of $500-$600k per year) is centrally located in Grand Forks, the largest community of the Boundary region. Each physician in our clinic has their own MOA, office, and two exam rooms, in addition to a treatment room, and a Residents’ exam room. We use the Profile EMR. Pre-natal care only (no deliveries in the community). Interest in geriatric care is an asset.

The multidisciplinary team includes a primary care Nurse and a Social Worker, as well as a foot care clinic. Grand Forks qualify for the Rural Locums for BC program, meaning that you have access to a healthy locum coverage pool. Generous rural recruitment and retention incentives available, in addition to $20-30k/year premiums from the Rural Emergency Enhancement Fund (REEF).

Opportunity to teach UBC Kootenay Boundary Family Medicine Program’s Residents. Thousands of dollars of training and CME are available through the RCME program and REAP. Get in touch and we’ll arrange a visit so that you can see for yourself why we love living and working here.

But, what if you want to escape all of that? Then we’ll tell you about the two clean-running rivers (the Granby and the Kettle) that surround the town, so you’ll know that a relaxing float, a paddle, or a fishing outing is always within reach. Should we mention the dappled shade of the cafe patios on Market Street and the friendly, walkable downtown core where City Hall, the library and gallery are all within a few blocks? Should we tell you about the wide, open spaces, the acreages for sale, the riverside properties?

In Grand Forks, healthy living, affordability and a great quality of life are the baseline.
