Programs
British Columbia
- the University
of British Columbia has a Rural Practice Programn. The new curriciulum
(initiated fall of 1997) makes this a mandatory rural rotation in the summer after second year. All are required
to do 4 weeks. Students can do up to 8 if they wish but the majority do 4. They get $200.00/wk from the Ministry
of Health. Rural is not clearly defined. This remains the only mandatory rural experience in the program.
UBC has a 23 year+ history of rural electices throughout the province in the summer after second year. Traditionally
> 80% participation was the norm.
- Medical students have two organizations -- the Medical Outreach Elective Program
and GOSA (Global Outreach Student's Association) -- which are actively promoting greater rural exposure for medical
students, especially in Northern and Aboriginal communities.
North West Territories
- Due to extreme remoteness, and many unique features, maximal benefit from an elective
here will be obtained by clinical clerks prepared with a solid grounding in family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics,
and internal medicine.
- Correspond directly with the practitioner to arrange dates, and provide a resume
and proof of your universities liability insurance.
- Submit a letter from your dean and an acceptance letter from the physician to the
registrar
