CRISIS MANAGEMENT IN THE SIMULATOR (CMS)

What's New

The Patient Care Simulator Center at the University of Ottawa offered its first formal CMS program in April, 2004. Encouraged by the very positive feedback and evaluations, they are offering a full program in 2004/2005. Welcome Ottawa!

Commissioned by Alberta's rural Physician Action Plan, and performed by RPM Planning Associates, the Report confirms that CMS participants received substantial benefits in leadership skills and crisis management. This Report is available here or from the SRPC (see below)

CMS uses the new high fidelity human patient simulator housed in facilities that simulate a realistic operating room. The learning objectives are two-fold; (1) this is an effective learning tool for hands-on management of life-threatening peri-operative situations. Rare events can be presented and managed in complete safety. (2) the attendees become familiar with the principles of crisis resource management (CRM). This training emphasizes human factors in the management of a crisis, including task delegation, prioritization, communication, and avoidance of fixation errors.

This program meets the accreditation criteria of the CFPC and has been approved for 7.0 MAINPRO-C credits.

FP-Anaesthesia Program Being Offered: Crisis Management in the Simulator

You are invited to experience high-fidelity simulation in a one-day SRPC sponsored course designed specifically for Family Practice Anaesthetists. Use of the Human Patient Simulator allows you to experience and manage rare and critical events in a controlled, unique and hands-on environment. Anaesthetics can be administered to a full-body adult mannequin complete with heart sounds, breath sounds, pulses and reactive pupils. Interact with the mannequin as it responds physiologically and in real-time to administered drugs, airway manipulations and numerous other interventions.

Working in any new environment can be stressful. The day starts with a thorough orientation. The scenarios you will encounter have specific educational objectives and mimic real-life situations. There will be time to repeat scenarios trying different management strategies. All workshop activities are completely confidential.

The course runs from 8:00-4:00.You will be sent a pre-course package with reference material and information. You will arrive in the morning and change into scrubs. Breakfast will be served while discussing course objectives and the day s events. The course will be tailored to your educational needs. The day is spent participating in scenarios allowing you the chance to play different roles throughout the day. A debriefing and discussion session will occur after each scenario. Lunch will also be provided. The day will end with a course evaluation, and a follow-up evaluation will be mailed 2-3 months later.
